Our second day in Bucharest started with a coach tour of the city. It was very nice and comprehensive and we saw a lot of the things people had seen the day before in separate tours. Our guide, Chris, talked a lot about the uprising that removed the communists from the country. If anyone has any questions about what communism does to a country a visit to Eastern Europe is all you need. The stories of what the Communists did to the people and the country were just stunning. The one fortunate thing is they did not destroy the history.
Our buses dropped us off in the city center for a short walking tour and lunch. We saw a lovely monastery but no pictures inside, so I ended up waiting outside and finally left to join a couple from Texas for lunch. We went to a restaurant recommended by our guide. We got our table and each ordered something different. Interestingly enough we never got our drinks and despite what we ordered, we all got grilled chicken, one with rice, one with fries and one with mashed potatoes. Everyone else in our group seemed to fair much better than we did. The only upside is they charged us next to nothing since we didn’t get anything close to what we ordered.
We returned to our buses and started our trip to Giurgiu to meet our boat. Those of us who started in Istanbul were ready to get to the boat. Not that our trip wasn’t fun and the cities nice, but we had taken a similar approach – carry ons had our clothes for our hotel stays and we hadn’t unpacked our big bags. We were joking that we were excited to see what we had brought with us.
It seemed like we were in the middle of no where, then suddenly here was this small town with all of these huge cranes along the river. Apparently the town builds and repairs river boats along with being a dock for the start/end of river cruises.
My room is on the 4th (top) floor with a French balcony. Rooms in river boats are not terribly big but nicely appointed. We arrived in time to unpack, shower and get ready for our first port talk and dinner. Everything was just as nice as I remembered it from my previous cruise.
