London

I love London.  Not sure why, it is not much different from visiting New York, but then I love to visit New York too.

I took a black cab from the airport to Castletown house in West Kensington.  Cabbies are fighting back against Uber by developing their own app and by October 31 all cabs must accept credit cards. I noticed on anything I looked up on Google I got an Uber ad - Uber here for xx pounds and get there in x minutes - pretty ingenious.  But I had my Oyster card so it was the Underground for me - so easy to get around.

Castletown house offers self catering apartments.  It is rated 3-4 star.  It is in an older house and the apartments show the wear, but it is very clean, the owner and staff are very nice and accommodating and the price is great.  It is a block and a half from a Tesco Express (small grocery store), a Co-op and the West Kensington Underground station.

I was upgraded to a one bedroom apartment which was nice except that it was a third floor walk up. By the end of my stay I though I was doing quite well with the stairs - new back exercises and swimming have really paid off.

This is my apartment and bath.  A bath tub!  A rare occurrence and a nice treat.

I headed down to Vicotria Station to catch the Hop-on-Hop-off bus.  It did not disappoint.  They had live guides who were quite fun.  I had seen most of major sights like the Tower of London and the Crown Jewels, but these buses take you through the neighborhoods where various famous people live/lived like Benedict Arnold, Paul McCarthy, Ringo Star, where the inquiry was held for the sinking of the Titanic.

This is the Gosvner neighborhood owned by the Grosvner family.  These homes lease only and the low end starts at $28 million.

Green Park where a lot of people have lunch.  They have lawn chairs you can rent for a pound during lunch - 7 pounds for the day.

This is Regent Street just a few blocks before Picadilly Circle and the theatre district.  Apparently there is an NFL football game in London October 1st and there are banners all over advertising it.

Believe it or not, a "United to Stop Trump" bus circling the center of London.  I'm not sure why it is in London, but I saw it several times today.

Twinings Tea - the original store where they will create your very own custom tea.

Heading on to the London Bridge.

The next three are Trifalger Square

British Airways

I have said more than once some of our American airlines could take a lesson from British Airways (BA).  I don't know how American and Delta work, but with United you have to pay to utilize their lounges either on an annual basis or on a per visit basis even with a first class ticket.  I have done that once,. $50, and boy does their lounge leave a lot to be desired compared to the Admirals Club serving BA and American.

British Airways, you just have to show your Business Class or First Class boarding pass and in you go to enjoy drinks at the bar just and snacks available like cheese, crackers, various types of hummus and pita/tortilla chips.  And since I am always early to the airport, that is just what I did.

What I didn't know was that BA's computer system crashed - again.  Shortly after I checked in. When I finally went down to the gate, I was told people were still waiting inline to check in and check luggage because it had gone totally manual.  One lady I spoke with waited 1 1/2 hours to get checked in.  So much for Q&A of their new software conversion.

The failed system also impacted boarding, it was all manual, checking boarding passes against passports, then we had to wait while they reconciled boarding pass stubs with checked luggage to be sure people and corresponding luggage matched.

Once we were off, it was the BA I am used to.  For the first time I flew on a 747 and I secured a seat on the top level.  It was very nice, only 18 seats and they were not all full, so it was quiet and service was exceptional.

The secret to the pods is to either get an aisle seat so you don't have to climb over anyone OR get the last window pod facing the back of the plane which gives you easy in and out access without having to step over anyone while they are stretched out and sleeping.  Personally I am an aisle seat person.  I did learn from one lady in front that every time someone went to the restroom, the light shone in her face and followed by the "whoosh" of the toilet.  She moved back with by me half way through the flight.  I suggested she check out SeatGuru which gives you the best and worst seats based on the type of plane.

This was my plane.  As you faced forward, I was on the left side of the top level last aisle pod.  What I discovered is the top level is very quiet until the cabin crew makes breakfast for the flight crew. The other interesting thing was that the cockpit was open and I got to sneak a peak at the cockpit, which was really cool.

This is a BA Business Class pod.  Very nice, very comfortable.  Drawer for computer or other things (for me earphones, surface and various power cords), individual lights, adjustable tray and individual media center including movies, TV shows, documentaries, games and updates on where you are in your flight (your location marked on a map with a plane graphic).

I found the selection of TV/Movies rather wanting but part of that is because I stream movies on Amazon, so maybe it is, as I would say to others, a personal problem.  The selection was split between European shows and US Shows and Movies, both "in theaters" and out on DVD.  The sound was good on my headphones (sound dampening Bose) but I found it almost too loud and the next notch down was mute.

Dinner this time did not live up to what I had last time I flew with them.  This was the starter, Maryland style crab cakes with a dill sauce and a mixed green salad with roasted tomatoes, croutons and sliced Parmesan cheese.  The salad was good, but the crab cake was dry and a lot of bread with a hint of crab - must be why they said "Maryland style".

I had pecan encrusted fish with green beans and what was supposed to be creamy polenta and a stone ground mustard sauce.

The fish was really quite tasty and was not completely over cooked although it was more to the well done side rather than the medium side.  The polenta was creamier once I added some butter.  The green beans were barely cooked so they had a nice crunch and nice green color.  Finally the mustard sauce.  It tasted like a sauce thickened with corn starch to which not enough mustard was added,  It was bland and very disappointing. Dessert was a a mango-chocolate slice which was very nice.

Overall the flight was nice.  One thing I did notice was the 747 as a plane was noisier than the 777 I was on last time.  Sound dampening headphones were a must just to drown out the plane noise.

When we finally got to London, we circled for a while, finally made it to a gate where we sat again since their systems once again were down.

Deb's European Trip #2

Ever since my last trip to Europe (Deb's European Trip) I have wanted to go back and do a longer river cruise.  So now I am.  Back to Uniworld because they are kinder to those of us who travel single.  Their single premiums are less and for many departure dates it is waived.  They also allow singles to upgrade which is not always the case with other lines.  Plus my travel agent, Margie is the best

Pre Trip Prep/Planning:

I am repeating many things I did my last trip because they worked well.  I kind of missed the fun of doing all the research, but it is also nice to know what I want and/or need.

Flight:  Once again I'm flying British Airways on points.  They allow you to do a layover as part of the scheduled flight without an extra charge against your points.  So I'm flying into London where I'll stay a few days before continuing on to Istanbul, Turkey to connect with the cruise.  The beauty of it is I can book business class from Denver to London, then my status carries over to my flight to Turkey, so it is first class from London to Istanbul.  The downside of British Airways is they are based in England which means taxes are substantially more than if you were flying an US airlines. BUT so far, the service on British Airways has been so superior to US airlines, so I don't mind the extra cost.  It is still much less than flying economy on any airlines I've looked at, and with your own pod, great food and service it's well worth it.

Accomodations:  While in London I'm returning to the Castletown House in Kensington, London.  The owners are delightful. When I scheduled my stay, they made sure I had the same room I had last time, which was a lovely studio with everything a single traveler needs including a washing machine and free wifi.  The apartment is a short walk from a Tesco convenience store and a subway station.  They provide a nice assortment of teas and cookies which may not seem like much, but after a long day out and about, they are delightful to come back to.

In Istanbul the first night is on me.  I always arrive the night before a flight, train or cruise departure. So I am staying at the Advantgarde Hotel Taksim Square the first night - only $130 for the night compared to the cruises hotel at $500 per night.

Transportation:
London - Oyster Card:  You can purchase the Oyster Card online and have it shipped to your home.  It is re-loadable once you are in London and it caps daily expenditures so you can travel as much as you want around town and not break the bank.
Turkey - they have Uber in Istanbul.  Tripadvisor reviews recommend Uber or the hotel recommended taxi cab.  I have a five minute ride from my hotel to my final destination.  Not sure yet which I will use, but based on reviews, the concierge at my hotel does a nice job and will get me connected with the right transport for my long ride.
